TALENT : SUSAN MITCHELL

Susan Mitchell received her degree in Drawing and Painting from the Edinburgh College of Art in 1984. After graduating, she stayed in Scotland to work as a chalkboard artist for a brewery, a scene painter at an old Victorian theatre, and as an art teacher.

One day while visiting Plymouth, England, a gypsy fortune teller told Susan she would "go across the water", have an only son, and illustrate children's books. It was a bit startling as she hadn't mentioned being an artist or her plans to move to Montreal, Quebec with her new Canadian husband.

Overseas, Susan became a freelance greeting card artist before finally embarking on a career as a children's book illustrator as predicted, Susan continues to live in Montreal with her husband, now a children's writer, and their one child, an only son.

Some of Susan's current projects include Paula Deen's My First Cookbook (Simon & Schuster 2008), Pumpkin Baby, written by Jane Yolen (Key Porter Books 2009) and Too Many Fairies, written by Margaret Reed MacDonald (Marshall Cavendish Books 2009).
